Celebrate the Full Buck Moon with "Through Adversity To The Stars"

Welcome to Through Adversity To The Stars!
This Soul FLOSS Workout is lovingly spun on sunshine, salt, and surf to help you actively pursue your soul purpose by avoiding precisely this trap: wanting too much! This spiritual workout has three phases:
Reducing Your Wish Weight
Attracting Life-Changing Opportunities
Taking Back Your Pride
It takes about a hour and will help you to make smart choices and right-size your expectations—letting go of things that are weighing you down, that are not conducive to your highest good, so you can take back the power that is rightfully yours (which is the theme of 2024)!
(And, for the writers in my audience—you just might find yourself penning your Next Great Poem/Story/Essay in the process!)
I’ve crafted this three-step Soul FLOSS Workout in celebration of the Full Buck Moon in Capricorn on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at 6:17 AM Eastern/3:17 PM Pacific). Because this is the second Capricorn Full Moon of the year, this is a powerful time for increased determination and self-awareness related to family, career, and/or public image.
The Buck Moon is often considered a time of growth, renewal, and regeneration, as bucks shed their antlers each year and grow new ones. This process is seen as a metaphor for personal growth and transformation, as we must also shed old patterns, beliefs, needs and desires to grow and evolve.
Falling at the end of Cancer season (shout out to all my fellow Cancer suns!), this Buck Moon offers an opportunity to communicate your hopes, needs, dreams, and fears clearly and honestly, setting realistic goals and work toward building stronger connections with what and who matters most to you—think partnerships, priorities, physical health, business ventures, creative endeavors, team projects, long-term goals, et cetera.
This year's Buck Moon reminds you that self-worth is an inside job and you know what you deserve! This is a time for you to shine and show the world what you're made of!
For an extra-magical boost, carve out an hour to perform this workout on the Full Moon (July 21) or the day before (July 20) or after (July 22).
Of course it always helps to right-size our expectations and let go of things that are weighing us down, so you can do this workout anytime!
You’ll need about an hour and an environment that allows you to do your work. A space that allows you to focus and energetically connect and manifest your intentions in a relaxed, easeful, and open way.
And remember, if you’re short on time or an ingredient, it’s okay to skip it or to substitute or really just spin the whole thing in a direction that feels even better for you.
This workout is just a jumping off point.
It’s 100% customizable.
Every ingredient is optional and you can improvise with what’s available.
If you want to space each phase of the workout out over a few days or a week, that’s okay! This workout could become a friendly companion on waking or just before bed, a nourishing and enlivening part of your daily routine!
Please gather:
something to write with and on
two pieces of paper
a pack of birthday candles, ideally with a rainbow of colors (You’ll need 6 total.)
scissors
tape
a plant ally (a houseplant, a tree you love, an avocado, some Spanish moss, a wildflower seed, a flower)
a chalice (a special cup that you only do magic with—if you don’t have one, get one!) + some water (ideally something natural from an ocean, sea, river, lake, etc.—and preferably SALTY!)
a talisman (a small object of your choice, like a birthday candle, prism, other crystal, piece of jewelry, piece of clothing, coin, seashell, rock, et cetera—anything you want to supercharge and can keep with you and interact with regularly)
Step #1 | Reduce Your Wish Weight | 20 min.
This step will help you to gain access to a completely new feeling: Satisfaction. Yes, with a capital “S”!
I learned it from magician Frater Archer, who explains: “Forcing yourself to make smart choices—and then to stick with them—is a huge first step towards increasing your level of resilience. Not only because it cuts short the never-ending, unexpressed wish-lists we hold in store for our imaginary futures. Cutting these lists short, like overgrowing bushes, will take a lot of weight off us…” So we accomplish life’s greatest task, which is to care for our own needs and desires!
Ok, for this step you’ll need the two pieces of paper, a birthday candle, the talisman, and something to write with.
Get comfortable. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Arrive in your body as a sacred space.
Candle #1 | Pink
Take a piece of paper and put down your name in the middle.
Place the talisman on the left (receiving) side of the piece of paper.
Light a birthday candle to speed the ritual up and put it in a “right now” frame of mind. The candle will also let the spirits (human, plant, animal, et cetera) know that you are available and ready to commune.
I like a pink candle because it’s good for spiritual development, but any color will do.
While the candle burns, write down all your wishes and desires on the other piece of paper.
When the candle flickers out, stop writing and cut out your wishes and desires.
Place your wishes on the first paper one at a time.
The distance from your name indicates the dearness of the desire.
Wishes taped close to your name are wishes that are NON-NEGOTIABLE, these dreams are ESSENTIAL to your life.
Wishes taped further from your name are less urgent, less essential.
Frater’s example.
As Frater explains, you'll be surprised what you'll come to see: “Literally this method will give you a glance at the orbits of desire that surround your personality—one sphere after the other laying out the nature of your short- and long-term desires and what you wish to attract...”
Take off all wishes until you are left with what you can realistically achieve in the next three months. Depending slightly on the nature of your wishes this shouldn't be more than 6-10 pieces of paper in total.
Wherever there’s space on the paper, write in all caps, ideally in SHARPIE: MANY PROBLEMS LEFT - ONE PROBLEM LESS = HAPPINESS.
Affix this piece of paper to your fridge or your bathroom mirror or your computer screen, somewhere where you will regularly be reminded of the DESIRES THAT MATTER MOST TO YOU, RIGHT NOW.
I was more liberal with my own instructions, generated this list, snapped a pic, printed it, and taped it to the magic mirror in my Writing Office/Zen Den next to the Guerrilla Girls’ iconic “The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist poster,” in preparation for attracting life-changing opportunities!
I invite you to take some creative detours, too!
Step #2 | Attract Life-Changing Opportunities
This step is a powerful portal. It asks you to take some time to envision what kind of life you want to be living and how you can take concrete steps to achieve that goal.
You’ll need three birthday candles, the chalice, the water, the talisman, the plant ally, and something to write with and on.
Get comfortable. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Arrive in your body as a sacred space.
Candle #2 | Orange
Light a birthday candle. I like orange because orange is good for career success, creativity, energizing, and goals, but any color will do.
As the candle burns, get comfortable and commune with your plant ally—hold it in your hand, touch its leaves, sit down and lean your back on its trunk, eat it, et cetera. This will shift your state of awareness and invite the plant ally to help you take back the power that is rightfully yours.
When the candle flickers out, pour some water into your chalice and place your talisman in the water.
Candle #3 | Green
Light another birthday candle. I like green because green is harmonious, abundant, and fertile, but any color will do.
As the candle burns, hold onto the chalice with one or two hands. Maybe stay in contact with the plant ally with one of your hands. Maybe right hand on the chalice for giving and left hand on the plant for receiving.
Take some deep breaths, however you like.
I like to imagine I am a balloon, and as I inhale I am expanding to XXXXXL—like my soul is expanding, and my ribs are opening because my soul is getting so big. As I exhale, I am shrinking, I am flushing everything I don’t need out of my system, and my ribs are closing because all those toxins—literal, existential, metaphorical—were taking up so much space!
Use whatever metaphors work for you.
Just take some deep, cleansing breaths and tune inward.
Feel the weight of your body pulling you down towards the Earth, being gentle with yourself as you melt down.
When you’re ready, invoke the feeling of expecting a big and exciting opportunity to arise in your life.
Fill yourself up with this feeling on each inhale.
On each exhale, send this emotion into your hands and into the chalice.
If you can, breathe through your plant ally, too.
Once the candle flickers out, start to imagine you get a glimpse around the corner and you get to see yourself living your most authentic, energizing, and fulfilling life.
You found your dream job or jobs.
You found your dream partner or partners.
You found the answer or the answers.
Let yourself be open.
Imagine the impossible.
If you notice any fears or hesitation show up, gently, ask them to step aside for a moment as you focus on expanding, dreaming, evolving.
Candle #4 | Purple
Light another candle. I like purple for manifestation, but any color will do.
While the candle burns, schedule a few things that will help you with this vision.
I don’t like to muddy the energy by getting out my phone, so I jot down notes on any scrap of paper and transfer to my digital calendar once I’m out of ritual.
However you go about it, what does your week, your month, your day-to-day like look like in this dream scenario? Write, draw, schedule.
When the candle flickers out, pick up the chalice and read whatever commitments you’ve made out loud. Speak them proudly, being careful to send this energy into the water, asking for it to hold onto this dream for you.
Place the chalice on your altar or by your plant ally, or offer it to the sun, or send it lovingly to your community by flushing it down the drain. Whatever feels right to you, honor it, because you are about to TAKE BACK YOUR PRIDE!
I used a yellow teapot, and added some offerings for my plant ally. And as always I invite you to take your own creative detours as you make this magical workout work for you!
Step #3 | Taking Back Your Pride | 15 min.
In this step we are expanding the month of pride because it should go beyond a month and we’re doing some “take back your pride” magic with some time-traveling color magic, so you leave the workout feeling SUPERCHARGED, with the energy you need to manifest your SOUL PURPOSE!
You’ll need two birthday candles and your talisman.
Get comfortable. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Arrive in your body as a sacred space.
Candle #5 | Yellow
Hold onto your talisman or place it in your bra or your pocket or your shoe.
The intention is to infuse this object with your pride. Not pride that’s motivated by ego or fear. Rather, the delicious pride that makes us feel more connected to the creative flow, that feels more expansive, that’s delicious and generous and kind. The “abundance-for-all” kind of pride.
Light another birthday candle—I think yellow is good because yellow is for memory, peace, friends and friendship, but any color will do.
Think of a moment in your life when you were stronger than you thought you were. When you did something you thought you’d never do—and it was OK. Or maybe even great!
As the candle burns, infuse yourself with this feeling. Acknowledge it. Feel the love and clarity that comes with knowing yourself—and exceeding your own expectations.
When the candle flickers out, light a new candle. I think purple is good because purple is for manifestation, power, death, grief, and magic, but any color will do.
Travel back in time to a moment in your life that caused you to doubt yourself and maybe feel even a little ashamed.
Using your pride-infused talisman and the power of perspective from the future, wrap yourself in the knowledge that this moment of pain shall pass. Tell yourself that things will work out beyond your wildest dreams. Feel reassured as you act as your own time-traveling guardian angel.
Repeat as/if needed. The more you practice this kind of time travel, you’ll create a time loop and start to get divine messages from your future self.
Dive in and rewrite the past! Make tomorrow a little brighter!
Stash the pride-infused talisman in your left pocket or bra (for receiving) or in your purse or your backpack. Take it with you out into the world.
See how you change.
See how the world changes.
